Lawrence Community Shelter, Inc.

Lawrence Community Shelter is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness, poverty, addiction, and mental illness. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where individuals can access the support and resources they need to rebuild their lives. We are committed to making a positive impact on our community by addressing the root causes of homelessness and offering comprehensive solutions. We operate as a low-barrier shelter, meaning we don't turn people away based on sobriety, income, or participation in programs. We believe that stable shelter must come first—people can't address other challenges until their basic needs for safety and rest are met. Our housing-first, trauma-informed approach recognizes that everyone's path is different and meets people where they are with dignity and respect. LCS operates multiple facilities in Lawrence, Kansas. Our emergency shelter provides an immediate safe haven, along with 30- and 90-day programs for those ready to work toward specific goals. Our Village program offers up to 6 months of shelter in individual cabins, giving residents extended time and stability to build toward independence. Our Pallet 24 facility addresses long-term homelessness with a unique approach: rather than requiring individuals to immediately adjust to full communal living, it gradually introduces them to community by offering night-by-night shelter shared with just one other person. This gentler transition helps build trust and comfort at each person's own pace. Together, these programs serve our community's most vulnerable residents with compassion, providing not just shelter but the foundation people need to work toward stability and independence.
