Janzen House Inc

Our shelter is located in the middle of downtown Marquette MI. We are an old railroad hotel, located within walking distance of bus, legal, courthouses, mental health and medical services. We offer 27 single rooms of subsidized, low-cost rentals and operate a 5 bed Emergency Homeless Shelter (under contract to Michigan Dept Human Services and Salvation Army Financial). We work to provide food, clothing, laundry and shelter to men with no or limited income. We are governed by a non-profit board and have been in continuous operation since the 1980's. We take pride in assisting individuals who are motivated and without resources, current employment, or reentering the community from jails, prisons and treatment facilities a platform to achieve the social and financial stability to obtain more traditional housing.

What we need most

We have a general kitchen and dining room, and do try to procure food donations from the local community. We encourage cooking and skill building and staff work to keep resources distributed on an equitable basis. We do make rice and bean based dishes and soups regularly. We try to obtain seasonings, salad dressings, mayo (etc) as often as possible. This allows us to convert meats, breads, pastas into meals. We tend to receive an excess of canned green beans and corn, but will make use of any donated foods. We usually have or develop several "kitchen captains" from our residents and try to make "batches" of food that can be eaten fresh or reheated from our fridges (as residents work all shifts and come/go throughout the day)
