The American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) is an organization that sets voluntary standards for not only play but numerous other consumer goods that a company should design their products to. While it is not a requirement to design to this spec, or even have tested to it, it is desirable to have the testing behind a company ensuring compliance as well as to avoid legal action . Handy Home Products is an Organizational Member that has voting rights on all play related items that come to ballot.
